This Sunday's Sermon Will Be Incomprehensible

I know what you’re thinking. How is that different than any other sermon Jared has preached? But I assure you, this time will be different. This Sunday, instead of focusing on what we know about God, I want to think about how much we don’t know about God. I figure I am just as qualified as anyone to talk about things no one knows anything about.

Throughout this sermon series, we have been thinking about what theologians call the attributes of God. What is God like? This Sunday, I want us to look at the attribute of incomprehensibility. Incomprehensibility can be difficult to comprehend. But the point is this: we don’t know God fully. Nowadays the words “know” and “comprehend” seem to mean the same thing. But back when theologians made up all the theology words, “to comprehend” meant to grasp something completely.

So what we are talking about here is the fact that God is infinite, so our limited minds will never in all eternity be able to wrap themselves around the glory and greatness of God. There’s an important caveat here: just because we don’t know God fully, doesn’t mean that we don’t know God truly. God graciously reveals Himself to us, in creation and in the Bible. What He has revealed to us is true. Furthermore, we are able to receive this revelation because God has made us in His image. We were created with the ability to know God, so that we might glorify and enjoy Him. This is our very purpose!

We can know God, but we will never in all eternity comprehend Him. According to the Bible, this is a good thing. In the Bible, the incomprehensibility of God leads to worship, obedience, humility, comfort, and ultimately hope.
